Day 2: reconnoitering...

Today we drove around the entire island. Began at the Volcano Village Farmer's Market, where we bought purple sweet potatoes, eggplant, apple bananas, and Freaky Tiki teriyaki sauce from an ex-Berkeleyan ex-attorney named Brian Nussbaum. Drove partway around the rim of Kilauea caldera (first 2 photos) before heading down Highway 11. Found a black sand beach (next 2 photos). Drove down South Point Road (supposedly against our rental car agreement) to the southernmost point in the United States (next 2 photos). Discovered the Kona Coast Macadamia Nut & Candy Factory, where we loaded up on macadamia nuts: plain, chocolate covered, carmel-coated with popcorn. Stopped to look at St. Benedict's painted church (next 3 photos). Towards sunset, we found a beautiful white sand beach near the northwest corner of the island. Don't remember the name of it and don't have any pictures, as we were strolling hand-in-hand doing that personal ad thing. When we finally made our way around to Hilo, we discovered the Beach Dog Internet Cafe (last picture) which would become our daily place to check e-mail and post blog updates.
