Day 7: the depths and the heights...

Got up early this morning to make tofu salad sandwiches for our trip. Going to be a long day. First, we have a date with a submarine. Later, the top of Mauna Kea. On the way to Kailua-Kona, we stopped at Volcano Visitor's Center and found a whole pack of happy face spider pictures! Then paid another visit to Kona Coast Macadamia Nut & Candy Factory for more macnut goodies for the road. We boarded the Atlantis X submarine for a tour of life on the reef, which was over in 30 minutes! What an expensive half hour. There were few fish to be seen from our side of the sub, and most of my attempts at photography (first 6 photos) were in vain.

Our next stop was to Pu'uhonua o Honaunau, the place of refuge for the ancient Hawaiians (last 6 photos). This spot is not only historically important but really beautiful. Palms trees, sea turtles, soft blue water. I wish we'd gotten here earlier to swim a bit and see the demonstrations. But it was already 5pm when we arrived.

Finally, we drove up 9300 feet to the Onizuka Center For International Astronomy Visitor's Information Station on Mauna Kea, where you can see more stars than you ever imagined. We brought warm clothes and blankets and were still cold. But for once, the cold didn't matter. What a perfect way to spend our 3-year anniversary together.
